9th Annual Model Contest Report

September 15th 2007

By Jason Smock & Gene King

WOW!!!  Our 9th Annual Model Contest in now in the history books, and history is for sure what this one consisted of.  A record of 313 individual entries were displayed this year, spanning several different genres of building.  From street rods, street machines, low riders, race cars, pick-ups and semi’s.  Military classes included vintage aircraft, modern jets and also land based vehicles.  There were even some dinosaurs spotted on the tables, not referring to any club members!

This was our 2nd year of holding the show at the Secrest Auditorium in downtown Zanesville.  Friday morning before the show, the lower level exhibition hall looked very big and very empty upon first getting there.  But after 6 hours of work from some very dedicated members, contest tables were set up with paper and skirts, the public address system was set up, awards were laid out and the room began to look like a serious contest venue.

Saturday morning dealt us our usual share of obstacles, from the record number of vendor tables to the unfortunate cancellation of our main photographer; we were able to get things up and running as usual.

This being our 9th year, we continually strive to improve on all aspects of the show, and this year we added a few new classes.  Military Aircraft this year was broken down to Jet and Propeller classes, and we also added an Under Construction Class which yielded some very interesting subjects that we are sure to see in the future.  These classes were easily filled along with all the other competition classes, with worthy entries competing for over 30 plaques and awards.

As usual our door prizes were a hit with GMP and Dremel companies donating some AMAZING door prizes. GMP donated (4) Mustang Convertible 1:18 scale die-cast cars, and Dremel offered up a deluxe Dremel tool kit.  Many vendors and regional hobby shops also participated in offering door prizes for our event.

As the years go by and our contest continues to grow, our club has seen an increase in participating members and membership numbers.   This year, we easily had the largest number of members on hand.  That truly helped make this one of our best run shows to date.  Judging 313 models was a challenge, but with everyone working together, it was done efficiently and to everyone’s relief, completed and the awards presentation started shortly after 3:30 p.m.

As another show is now in the books, we’re already thinking about next year and what improvements we can make.  We ask you, our participants, to voice your opinions and suggestions.  Please e-mail us at jsmock001@columbus.rr.com.

Next year we’ll be celebrating our 10th Annual Model Car Contest – Wonder what we can do to top the previous 9?  You can bet that we’ll be thinking.
